Food is crucial. Already the Sunday Herald has announced – “2008: The year of global food crisis”.
‘The West’, Scotland, Edinburgh etc. will not be immune. Food will become more expense due to greater demand and the costs of production and transport. Some agricultural land is likely to be used for bio-fuels. More rain forests will be destroyed for growing grain.
The food group will look at these issues at encourage more ‘local foods’ – farmers markets, allotments, community orchards etc. The Meadows once had allotments (during the second World War) – will it happen again?
Food is not just about growing and buying, cooking, processing and composting are all factors to be considered.
